SeaTools is a well known utility from popular HDD manufacturer Seagate, SeaTools free hard drive diagnostic software comes in two flavors one for DOS and other for Windows OS. While both hard-disk diagnostic tools are excellent, they are different as SeaTools for DOS is more powerful because it is able to access the disks more directly and natively to diagnose the problem correctly. Mar 14, 2014 - The issue I am having is that SeaTools is a FreeDOS iso and most websites I have seen that offer iso to bootable flash drive software are sketchy. I looked into trying to. SeaTools is a computerhard disk analysis software developed and released by Seagate Technology. It exists as a version for DOS (bundled in a bootable medium with FreeDOS) and Microsoft Windows.
SeaTools is software to test and analyze hard disks on a hardware level. It can perform short and long drive self-tests and read/write tests, extract S.M.A.R.T. indicators and drive information, and perform advanced tests. It was created by Seagate in response to the fact that more than one third of all drives sent in for repair were actually not defective at all, thus creating unnecessary costs for retailers and the company by having to ship and analyze such disks.[1][2]
SeaTools for DOS comes in a package with the FreeDOS operating system. It can be downloaded as a bootable ISO image from the Seagate website.
The Windows version of SeaTools supports any hard disk regardless of manufacturer. It supports analysis for disks connected via PATA/SATA, USB, IEEE 1394 and SCSI.
The enterprise edition is still provided as a legacy version for Seagate hard disks only. It supports only SCSI or Fibre Channel drives and is designed for use with servers and workstations by supporting tests of multiple drives simultaneously as well as sequentially.
SeaTools is a powerful diagnostic application that helps you to quickly determine the condition of the disk drive and Hard Disk health of an external hard drive and computer (Windows desktop or laptop).
Segate’s Seatools for Windows is really easy to use. It enables the Windows users to probe the performance of their disks and evaluate their current state. The diagnostic tool performs several basic tests that help to determine the health of the hard drive.
It can test all types of internal drives including SCSI, PATA, SATA, etc. Besides this; it can also test external drives (USB or FireWire). If the drive passes SeaTools for Windows, troubleshooting can proceed to other areas.
To test the software for its functionality, simply download and install it on your Windows computer.
Once you run it and select the drive to be tested, a menu of the possible diagnostic tests is shown. With the exception of Long Generic which offers the option to repair sectors on USB external drives, all other Basic Tests are data safe, read only tests. Select the tests that you would like to perform. The test will begin immediately.
These tests include:
• SMART Check
• Short Drive Self Test: 20 to 90 seconds long
• Long Drive Self Test: may take up to 4 hours, progress in 10% increments
• Drive Information: can be saved to the Log file
• Short Generic: three-part test
• Long Generic: progress in 1% increments, sector repair option for USB external
• Advanced Tests.
It is important to note that if the above procedure fails you may have to consider replacing the non-functional hard drive with a new one.
